Hue Jackson announced that rookie 2nd round pick DeShone Kizer will start in the teams 3rd preseason game. Kizer has had flashes in his first two NFL appearances, however the hype-train definitely slowed down after a lack-luster performance against the Giants.
Jackson still hasn’t named his starter, and it seems that Cody Kessler is completely out of the picture at this point. Brock Osweiler won’t even dress for the game, and I think this is a smart decision. The Browns and everyone else who watches football have seen everything they need to from Osweiler. They also are reportedly trying to trade him, but I’m not sure if the Browns could get anything more than a case of Bud Lights for him, especially with his contract. Kizer is the one who needs the reps, and if he comes out and performs well he may just be named the week one starter. Worst case scenario Kizer has a bad game and you have Osweiler as your week one starter.
As far as the Browns are concerned, they likely are hoping that Kizer plays well enough to warrant starting him in the first game of the season at home against the Steelers. The roster has more talent than it’s ever had, and if they had competent quarterback play I could see them being an above .500 team this season. Brock Osweiler would be a bad quarterback if he didn’t turn the ball over so much. I truly think this team would be in much better shape had they stuck at pick #12 and drafted Deshaun Watson.
